Explore Torres Strait and Thursday Island with local Tony Titasey who draws on his thousand year seafaring ancestry in doing what he loves best: fishing and meeting people.
Formerly a merchant seaman and a commercial fisherman, Tony has realised a long held dream to operate a fishing charter and island tour enterprise.
Naturally, he finds it very difficult to call this 'a job'. As if taking clients on fishing trips most days is not enough, he spends every day off fishing, arguing to his wife that these trips are actually 'research' and must be made for professional development.
Tony is the first and only Torres Strait Islander to operate a charter business on Thursday Island.
Chill out and check into TI Time as you jump on board with Tony for an adventure. |

Tony's Island Adventures offers full day or half day fishing trips or adventures which include bushwalking, visits to a waterhole or fortress or lighthouse or hitting the beach for a swim or a combination of those to include some fishing.. In fact, you can checkout the options and tailor your own tour.
For those who aren't on TI Time, Tony offers quick two and a half hour cruises which could include a bushwalk or a sunset cruise.
Tony's adventures are conducted in the M.V. Madam Dugong, a fully licensed and surveyed 5.9 metre fibreglass vessel. Tony charges a boat price for all trips which is the same for up to 4 for fishing and 5 for adventuring.

Thursday Island, or T.I. as it is known by locals, is the gateway to the Torres Strait, an expanse of sapphiric seas dotted with approximately 100 islands, 17 of which are communities.
Owing to the cross-cultural relationships in the Torres Strait over the past 160 years Torres Strait Islanders are a good looking people with strong features that suggest the Asian, European and Pacific Islander ancestries.
Torres St rait Islanders have always maintained a close connection with their islands and their sea. Culture and tradition are integral part of life here, despite western influences. |

Torres Strait as we know it today was settled by Asians, Pacific Islanders and Europeans in the 1860s with the rise and rise of the pearling industry. Tony's father, grandfather and great-grandfather (who operated a fleet of luggers that were all lost in the 1899 cyclone) were all pearl divers. From the mid-twentieth century, pearling was no longer viable due to the increasing use of plastic for buttons.
Tony spent some time cray, mackerel and line fishing which are the principal economies of the Torres Strait today.
T.I. is the northernmost administrative settlement of Australia and boasts an amazing array of services, government departments and amenities (including two hotels, four pubs and bowls and boat clubs, eight churches, not to mention seven playgrounds). Some outlets of interest are:
- A fabulous supermarket, IBIS (so named after the bird)
- A mini-department store and top rate clothes shop
- A must see souvenir and t-shirt shop, Mona's Bazaar
- Post office and National Bank
- A clothes shop
- A hairdresser
- The Gab Titui Cultural Centre displaying artifacts collected by Haddon in the 1890s and local gallery where Tony's wife Catherine exhibits her pastel paintings.
- Ilan Life Cafe based in the Gab Titui Cultural Centre that sells a range of healthy island and everyday food.
- The Gateway Resort and World War II Heritage Museum on Horn Island
Like most small communities, T.I. has a closeknit community of some 4000 people who observe the cultural tradition of 'T.I. time', being laid back and not stressing out unnecessarily like our city siblings are apt to do.

Of course Tony will offer fishing as the only trip available but Catherine suggests a three to five day stay and spening three days on the water, a day exploring TI and Horn Island and doing a Horn Island tour and one day on a trip to the Tip of Cape York . The Jardine Motel offers both very comfortable and and budget accommodation. Camping is also an option.
Tony has six children ranging from 3 to 27 years so is very keen to ensure that families enjoy their holidays (not to mention indoctrinate the younger generation into fishing!).
T.I has a ring road of only five kilometers so you will be able to walk everywhere.
